View the moon and Saturn through a variety of telescopes at the San Bernardino County Museum during the Moon Party on Saturday, June 27, from 8:30 to 10:00 pm. The event, hosted by the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers and the museum’s education division, is free.
“The viewing will feature a very plump crescent moon along with the planet Saturn,” said Chris Clarke, program coordinator for the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers. “Lunar detail should be quite stunning, since the moon is only a couple of days away from being at first-quarter. Also, Saturn’s rings will appear almost edge-on, looking like thin ‘sticks’ protruding from the sides of the planet’s disk. Although not really unusual, this only occurs halfway through Saturn’s 30-year-long orbit around the sun—once every 15 years.”
Several telescopes of different sizes and types will be set up at the museum’s parking lot that evening. All ages are welcome, and the public is encouraged to ask questions.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
