I believe the citizens and city employees of Redlands need to be made more aware of how important it is to spend their money in our local community. Those tax dollars support the salaries as well for Fire and Police. Each household needs to evaluate where they spend their money. Making online purchases does not bring tax dollars into our community. Costco is not located in Redlands and does not bring money into our community. South Coast Plaza, Victoria Gardens or any number of shopping areas outside of Redlands do not supply salaries and retirement for our city employees. ALL families need to be aware how important it is to support our local businesses so we can maintain the community we want so desperately to keep safe.
Many of us work hard to raise money for a long list of community non-profit organizations which we feel passionate about. The organizations and its members need to be reminded how important the business sponsorships are to the organizations. Without the business sponsorships, many of those organizations we determine to be valuable would not exist.
We need to support our community and spend our money locally.
I agree Lynda, we need to support local business as best we can. One thing to remember, most online sites are now charging tax, so if you buy from a "local" online website, there is a great chance that the taxes stay local.
A great local community organization we can all think about as summer rolls around is the Redlands Bowl. The Redlands Bowl always loves your support and you can support them online at http://www.redlandsbowl.org, or on Facebook at, http://www.facebook.com/redlandsbowl
Keeping the connection between where the tax dollars go and to what budget items they are spent on is something that, regrettably, most consumers do not consider when they are making purchases. As residents continue to juggle limited and in many cases reduced incomes, the choice to shop at discount and/or warehouse stores will grow. Of course, small businesses will have a harder time competing with the volume discounts that are possible through large chains/companies but what small business can provide and highlight to the consumers are quality, variety and very importantly a more personal touch. Adding value to shopping experiences can be or rather should be the goal of all small businesses in any town.
As far as business sponsorships are concerned, you are quite accurate in the non-profit organizations and civic groups need for them but as a small business owner myself, I am very aware and saddened by the fact that oftentimes, the very groups of individuals that solicit donations are the same ones who do not patronize the business to whom they ask for help.
